Emergency Dentist vs. Hospital Emergency Room

During a dental emergency, it's important to know when to seek treatment from an emergency dentist rather than going to an emergency room. While hospitals can provide general medical care, they often lack specialized dental equipment and expertise required to treat severe dental emergencies. By visiting an emergency dentist like Dr. Maria Upshaw at Upshaw Dental Studio, you can receive tailored dental care that specifically addresses your emergency situation. Emergency dentists have the knowledge, skills, and equipment necessary to treat dental emergencies promptly and effectively. However, if you are experiencing a life-threatening injury such as severe facial swelling or suspect a broken jaw, head to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Common Dental Emergencies We See

At Upshaw Dental Studio, we are equipped to handle a wide range of dental emergencies, including situations like:

Severe Toothaches

Persistent and intense tooth pain may indicate an underlying issue, such as an abscess or dental infection.

1

Dental Trauma

Accidents, falls, or sports injuries can lead to chipped, cracked, or knocked-out teeth, requiring immediate attention. In most cases, these emergencies should be tended to within the hour.

2

Lost or Loose Dental Work

When a dental filling or crown becomes dislodged or falls out, it can cause sensitivity and pain, not to mention putting the tooth at risk of fracture.

3

Broken or Fractured Teeth

Having a broken or chipped tooth can cause embarrassment, discomfort or pain. Dr. Upshaw can address these issues by providing help as quickly as possible.

4

Abscessed Tooth

An abscessed tooth is a painful infection that requires immediate treatment to prevent further complications. In most cases, abscesses are due to deep areas of decay, cracks, or severe bone loss, requiring different types of treatment depending on the source of the infection.

What to do if You Have a Chipped or Knocked-Out Tooth

If you are experiencing a dental emergency, the first thing to do is contact our office. Once we plan for your arrival, be sure to do the following:

  • Chipped or Knocked-Out Tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and bring any tooth fragments with you to the dental office. If it is a completely knocked-out tooth, handle the tooth by the crown (top) and avoid touching the root. Rinse the tooth gently with water and try to reinsert it into the socket if possible. If not, place the tooth in a container of milk or saliva to keep it moist, and seek immediate dental care.
  • Pain or Swelling: Take an anti-inflammatory pain reliever such as Motrin (ibuprofen) as directed. Apply a cold compress to the affected side of your face for up to 20 minutes at a time to help with the swelling. Rinsing with warm salt water can also help.
